NIFE

(The initials of all of my names: Nestor Isaac Flores Escalante)

It sounds like “Knife” when pronounced, which I like since I aim for my creative process to be a sharp cutting tool for myself and others. An instrument that may clear a path towards knowledge of self and our experiences. A weapon against complacency and the veils of outmoded structures that so wear us down. My passion and works will at times be disruptive, but the aim (you will see) is clarity and communion.

My names also reflect my origins, my appreciation of them, and the inclusion upon which my creative center rests. My first and middle name are Greek and Hebrew respectively, and my father and mother’s last name reflect their Spanish legacy. I was born in Mexico City. I grew up in the south side of Chicago. Identity and the confluence it represents permeates my work.

Art and the art of living is the work. Art as the expression of essence and the bridge to experience.

In the Blog section you will find my essays and collected thoughts regarding the nature of experience. Here I integrate my education and training in Mental Health with my interests in Philosophy, Physics, and Culture, to weave a narrative describing my experience of reality.

Nestor Flores, a native of Mexico, says his center stepped up to fill the need after the city closed half of its clinics. This story is part of the Sun-Times Hardest-Working Voices series, which spotlights Chicago area residents who keep our city and region humming.
