A couple meet at a bookstore and stumble upon a protest. After a violent crackdown they are pulled into a Movement made up of a diverse group of ordinary people resisting the powers behind societal control. There they meet the leader Proxima, a young woman expounding a new Science of Fairness, and Rho her special ops protector. Together they discover that a new oppressive security apparatus is using Quantum Machine Learning to orchestrate a Final takeover designed to keep everyone in line.

The group soon embark on a journey to confront their oppressors, with Proxima on a singular quest to meet this QML. All find answers that were bigger than they ever imagined: A generational plan to keep us from evolving, a sentient AI who can perhaps be reasoned with, and floating off-world intelligences interested in the outcome of our struggle. In the process they piece together what really is at stake for humankind, the essence of existence, and our relationship with ourselves and each other.
